In this episode, we talk to AAC member, alpinist, and ski mountaineer, Maddie Miller, about a Nepal trip gone wrong–what she hoped was going to be a level-up in her climbing career, turned into a medical evacuation. At 16,200 feet, Maddie started experiencing signs of the extremely life-threatening medical condition HAPE, or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema. Thankfully, she had the ability to call for a helicopter, and get emergency care–all covered by her AAC rescue benefit and medical expense coverage. We dive into her experience with the freaky feeling of gurgling lungs, what other people don’t realize about this extremely deadly medical diagnosis, and what it means to feel as fit as possible but still affected by altitude. At the AAC, we believe in the power of climbing to change lives. We are driven by the potential to support every climber that we can, to use the AAC’s expertise and legacy to deliver resources that climbers can lean on—that’s why we are so proud of this Impact Report. Each grant recipient we inspired, each lodging guest we launched into adventure, each climber who has learned how to climb a little more safely, is what drives our work. How does it all break down? Here’s how we’ve met the needs of the AAC community this year. https://americanalpineclub.org/news/2024/11/5/aacs-2024-impact-report

You will find no sweeping mountain panoramas or harrowing whippers in the new climbing film "Jamie." Instead, we see a process of self-realization as Logan navigates a community of climbers who can be inexperienced grappling with the fluidity of gender. https://www.climbing.com/videos/new-film-about-trans-climber-jamie-logan/
