If you’re an AAC member at the Partner, Leader, Advocate, or Great Ranges Fellowship level, then you have access to the AAC’s rescue benefit. Make sure you know how to initiate a rescue—before you find yourself in that kind of situation. We know that a lot of our members put their trust into Garmin products* as a backup for when a cell phone isn’t reliable. Here’s how to prepare your Garmin device to contact Redpoint Travel Protection in the case of an emergency away from home: *Did you know that AAC members receive 20% off Garmin products through ExpertVoice? A basic guideline for anchor building: narrow angles are good, wide angles are bad. While that’s generally true, it turns out in some cases, a very narrow angle is not so good for load sharing. Check out a recent article and video by Over the Edge Rescue on this. (Warning: anchor nerds only.) Premium Article available https://www.alpinesavvy.com/blog/is-a-small-anchor-angle-better-maybe-not

This weekend had first trad climbing experience outside of mountaineering routesThe rock was technically easy to climb, but a bit scary. Positive slope means falling to the last anchor will hurt a lotTurns out I didn't know some essential things about building anchors (like the correct way to clip into self-equalizing anchor). Also lack of practice since the spring made me work way slower than I used toBut thanks to the great mountaineer leading our group we learned a lot in a single day, even practised with 6-8 types of anchors..at the very end I chipped away a corn kernel sized piece of fingernail while hammering out some pitons in the dark ^~^#climbing
