“If you just stop for a second, I can show you there’s no road out there!” Ben said. “I know there’s a road there; we drove it a couple years ago!” I fired back. We hadn’t even started an ordeal that would surely drive us to our wits’ ends, and we were already lost and… https://climbingzine.com/pain-perseverance-linking-sixteen-towers-day/

As a youngster I was addicted to hills/mountains/rock climbing. I've only got 1 photo of me climbing from those days, we rarely took a camera. It was so hard getting to a crag that you climbed in rubbish condtions to avoid wasting a weekend. The shot is of me on P1 of Praying Mantis in Borrowdale on a damp grimy day, 1967ish, doing it wrongly of course. The mantra at the time was "the leader never falls" and you can see why! It's (usually) a bit safer these days. #Climbing #LakeDistrict

Today I was supposed to host an informal skills clinic with a climber new to the outdoors, and teach them the basics of anchor cleaning. They ended up rescheduling, so I had some time to waste. We're usually taught to clip draws with the gate facing away from the direction of the next bolt/pro, but if you're clipping a hanger (as opposed to a glue-in), could the biner rotate, and have the gate opened by the bolt itself? I tried with an extendable draw I had, and it took some doing, but it was definitely possible. Rope movement can make a draw do funny things, and extendable draws in particular love to flip orientation. Lots of seemingly impossible things have happened to unattended protection! This doesn't really apply to local crags here since bolts here are glue-ins, with exception of the anchor, but food for thought. All the same it seems the advice to clip with the gate facing away from direction of travel still seems to supercede this niche edge case. Milton had overgrowth knots, the greasy kind, matting his beard to his wooly secondhand pullover, which sagged without shape over his sulking frame. As he sat in the passenger seat beside me, looking a bit like Schulz’s Pig-Pen, I almost admired it. His was a special form of dereliction.
