In this episode, we’re sitting down with AAC member David Corvi to talk about his Live Your Dream grant experience—a beautiful day that turned into a 24 hour epic on Mt. Whitney in September of 2024. Getting off route, climbing through pockets of ice and show, and getting lost on the descent were only some of what the team experienced that day. Because there is another layer of complexity to this story, a mental load that added a unique weight to that experience. David’s trip to Whitney was also in memory of his stillborn son, Charlie. In the episode, David shares about his family’s experience with infant and child loss, how climbing and other forms of outdoor adventures have helped him process his grief and continue to parent Charlie even though he is gone, and likewise he reflects on how physical challenges, like half marathons and the Whitney trip, are a way to honor the life Charlie won’t ever get to experience. Dive into this episode to hear about your classic alpine day gone wrong, and just one way that grief and loss can be processed in the mountains. This weekend tried ice climbing for the first time. With small drytooling experience, soft-ish ice and slightly positive slope it was surprisingly easy. Once did 5 climbs with no breaks, and only stopped because of queueAlso tried different ice tools: my new Trango Raptor, Petzl Sum'tec and two variations of non striking tools. Non striking are physically easy to to use when ice is not flat, but are harder to trust. Raptors are holding best, but the striking motion is harder to master because of the blade angle. Sum'tecs are just the easiest for beginnersAnd this was an actual frozen waterfall!(more like a frozen shell around still flowing waterfall, and the ice in the middle was quite thin and not attached to the rock)#climbing #mountains #ice

I started listening to the Grateful Dead a week before Jerry Garcia died. The year was 1995 and it happened as it always happened then: a friend played me some Dead tunes, and then I made a tape recording of the ones I liked.  I played Uncle John’s Band, over and over again, entranced by… https://climbingzine.com/unbroken-chain-a-letter-for-phil-lesh-by-luke-mehall/

The setters compressed the difficulty into the tops of each of the four boulders. It made for a slow start and an exhilarating finish. https://www.climbing.com/competition/olympics/mens-boulder-semifinal-paris-olympics/
