You know you’re getting old when they start replacing the bolts you used for a first ascent. That was my first thought when I heard that an anchor I’d placed, over in my old stomping grounds of Gunnison, Colorado, was getting an update. Story by Luke Mehall. This piece is published in Volume 15, now… https://climbingzine.com/the-art-of-the-first-ascent-by-luke-mehall/

This weekend tried ice climbing for the first time. With small drytooling experience, soft-ish ice and slightly positive slope it was surprisingly easy. Once did 5 climbs with no breaks, and only stopped because of queueAlso tried different ice tools: my new Trango Raptor, Petzl Sum'tec and two variations of non striking tools. Non striking are physically easy to to use when ice is not flat, but are harder to trust. Raptors are holding best, but the striking motion is harder to master because of the blade angle. Sum'tecs are just the easiest for beginnersAnd this was an actual frozen waterfall!(more like a frozen shell around still flowing waterfall, and the ice in the middle was quite thin and not attached to the rock)#climbing #mountains #ice

I hold and turn my helmet like a classroom globe, dragging my fingers over each mark, each sign of wear. Every indent, every groove represents a route, a pitch, a move, a memory. Note: this piece is published in the new Zine, Volume 17, now available to order. In my hands is my beaten-up shield.… https://climbingzine.com/my-helmet-by-david-rozul/

About the 5.14d he said, "I could even imagine hard 8c [5.14c] the way I did it..." The post Alex Honnold Climbs 5.14+ in the U.S.A. appeared first on Gripped Magazine. https://gripped.com/news/alex-honnold-climbs-5-14-in-the-u-s-a/

To keep things sporting, the team kayaked 280 miles, fended off polar bears, dangerously large waves, and their own inexperience in such lightweight boats. https://www.climbing.com/news/big-wall-first-ascent-greenland/
