Interesting Petzl recall on a harness (there are multiple models where I could see this happening... plus equipment loops on some can easily be mistaken as weight bearing) -- must have been a death/injury. #climbing #recall #harness #petzl https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2024/Petzl-America-Recalls-GYM-PANDION-and-PANJI-Climbing-Harnesses-Due-to-Fall-Hazard

@ai6yr CPSC page says “Incidents/Injuries:
There has been one report of a user in the United States suffering serious injuries from a fall.” Thankfully just that. -
@ai6yr This is the reason Black Diamond was created. Patagonia was sued for a harness death & became uninsurable for hardware.

@ai6yr If the harness is anything like in the photos, I'm really not sure how you'd fuck up figuring out where to attach your clip, unless the green color and arrow are pointing to the non-load-bearing part of the harness.

@ai6yr First thing I thought of when I saw it was the firefighter who died climbing in Index, WA last year due to an equipment failure. I don't know details though.
-
@stevewfolds @ai6yr More specifically Chouinard Equipment, as Patagonia never made gear.

I bought one of the harnesses in question back in the 1980's. There was an REI branded model. The issue was that there were two tie in loops in the front side by side, and if you didn't tie into both it put a shearing strain on the stitching.

@mikemccaffrey @ai6yr Apparently it was put on backwards.

@mikemccaffrey@pdx.social that's what my first thought was too. Lay any one of those rental harnesses on the ground and you've got a rats nest of webbing.
Sounds like a voluntary recall. Perhaps the new version will have lots of brightly coloured arrows.
