Introducing the OpenBeta Forums!

OpenBeta
  • Hello there!

At OpenBeta, we love climbing! We assume you do too, which is probably why you're here. We also love the climbing community: the friends you make at the crag or in the gym who point out the best routes, share gear and advice, and support each other on their projects. We think that the connections we make through a shared passion - whether they last a lifetime or just one climbing session - are part of what makes climbing so special, and so fun!

We also believe that everyone benefits when information and communication is accessible to everyone. The climbing information in OpenBeta is accessible to everyone via the main website and the free API. While we currently have a Discord server to help facilitate communication and community, Discord servers require a login to join a server and see the discussion, and even then it can be hard to find information if you're looking for a particular discussion thread.

That's why we're proud to announce the OpenBeta forums!

@julian, on behalf of NodeBB, has generously offered to host these forums, powered of course by their excellent open-source forums software. We're hoping this can be a great resource and a platform for the climbing community. We encourage users to post guides, ask questions and engage in discussion, share recent trips, and maybe even find climbing buddies to meet up with! This is also a great place to discuss OpenBeta itself to suggest features, provide feedback, and ask questions.

You can sign up to the forums with your existing OpenBeta or Discord accounts, and then feel free to introduce yourself in General Climbing! Make sure to review the Community Guidelines, but the rules really boil down to "don't be a jerk and have fun."

As with the main OpenBeta app, the more people that come here and use the forums, the more useful it is to everyone, so please tell your friends! And thanks for being here!

    Signed,
    Your friendly neighborhood Ben

  • Nifty site ya got here. Anyway to scrape my MP route submissions?

  • Hi @tradiban! Let me ask around. Nice to see you here. Folks on MP say you're a neat guy to climb with, hope we get the chance someday.

  • @tradiban What are you specifically trying to scrape? There are legal concerns about scraping the whole site, but I'm sure it'd be fine to import your own content if we have a tool for it

  • @bean just my personal contributions over there, I haven’t dived into this data base yet but would be great to have an alternative to MP

  • @devnull call the hotline! 951-527-7959

  • @tradiban latest discussion on the Discord about this center around your legal right to ask Mountain Project to export your contributions.

If you can get that from them then maybe getting that data into OpenBeta is a possibility, although I'm not part of the development team.

  • I think my son knows what Discord is!

Hello and welcome to the OpenBeta Forums' September update! It's been a pretty wild couple months here as @bean and I try to set things up here. To give you a bit of history, before these forums were re-branded under the OpenBeta banner, it served as a news aggregator for climbing news publications. I was finding that I was missing certain important events (related to the 2024 Olympic qualifier series, mostly) and wanted one single place to check for climbing news. To achieve that, I turned to my old friend RSS (remember that?) in order to proactively pull in content from all sorts of publications, @Gripped, @climbing, @HowNOT2, etc... All of that still remains, and can be viewed in the @news and @videos categories. By August I teamed up with @viet and @bean to re-brand the forums to expand OpenBeta's social reach. The idea of running a forum paired very nicely with OpenBeta's mission to advocate for a free exchange of beta and ideas, as well as an underlying current of maintaining freedom of content ownership. We want the OpenBeta forums to be your one-stop shop for climbing-related news and discussion. Help us make it happen by joining the conversation today! A couple new items this month to introduce: You don't need to actually visit the site to be kept up-to-date. You can register your for push notifications and receive updates straight to your device. This works in-tandem with the in-app notifications, and email notifications/digests. We updated the main homepage to a more "feed-style" concept, which highlights content more than a traditional category/topic layout. There are obviously many opinions on whether this is preferable or not, but in the meantime, the original category listing layout can be found at /categories. N.B. The NodeBB team has generously provided hosting for OpenBeta, and in exchange, we get to test our brand-new functionality before it is released, win-win!
